Understanding Water-Based, Oil-Based, and Emulsion-Based Skincare
The base of your skincare product determines how it delivers active ingredients to your skin.
Skincare products fall into three fundamental categories based on their formulation base: water-based, oil-based, and emulsion-based. Each has distinct advantages depending on your skin type and concerns.
Water-based formulations (toners, essences, gels) deliver hydrophilic actives efficiently. They absorb quickly, layer well, and suit oily or combination skin types. Our water-based serums use carefully selected humectants to boost hydration without heaviness.
Oil-based formulations (facial oils, oil cleansers, balms) excel at delivering lipophilic actives and reinforcing the skin's natural lipid barrier. They're ideal for dry skin and barrier repair protocols.
Emulsion-based products (creams, lotions) combine water and oil phases using emulsifiers. This allows a single product to deliver both hydrophilic and lipophilic actives while providing a comfortable, cosmetically elegant texture.
At Beauty & Pharma, we select the optimal base for each product based on its target actives, intended skin concerns, and desired application experience. The base isn't an afterthought — it's a core formulation decision.
